I enjoy having company. I like getting things ready, planning meals, cooking, and baking luscious desserts—all in preparation for my guests. Unexpected company is another thing. While I’m smiling and welcoming them in, I’m mentally going through my refrigerator and pantry trying to come up with a combination of ingredients that would make a palatable meal, or trying to figure if we have enough to take them out to eat.

Imagine having 5000+ show up unexpectedly for a meal. That’s what happened to Christ and his disciples. And while the disciples were mentally “going through the refrigerator,” and calculating the cost, it says that Christ “already had in mind what He was going to do.”* I love those words. There was no panic, no quick mental calculation – He already knew exactly what was needed, and how He would respond to that need. And the results were that everyone had more than enough.

I find great comfort in that. When I face unexpected problems in life, when I am totally unprepared for something that comes my way—Christ has a plan. He is prepared for my need, and already has in mind what He’s going to do—and it will be more than enough.
